We think our pigs are pretty happy. They are housed in barns with access to an outside lot. The mothers have their babies in roomy, straw-filled pens and when weather permits the breeding herd is allowed to forage on pasture. They are never confined in huge buildings without windows over smelly pits--and no farrowing crates or gestating stalls where animals can only stand up and lay down.
Our animals are free to mingle and socialize with each other. The baby pigs stay with their mothers until about 6 weeks of age (a long time after commercially raised babies). Our butcher hogs are fattened out in pens, but they have lots of room and always have access to fresh air and sunshine.
